See For Yourself

The same old tables and graphs we have all used for the last 30 years are no longer fit for purpose. They either overwhelm you with too much detail, or over-simplify.

Fractal Maps can clearly display 10x more hierarchical or multi-dimensional data on screen than any other technique, 100x more than a pivot table, and this improved visibility feeds directly through to faster analysis, deeper insight and greater confidence in the quality of your data and conclusions. It is like turning on the lights.

Seeing is believing, however, so go ahead and try out some of the examples below, which represent just a small fraction of the potential uses of Fractal Maps.

Global Equity Market Activity · Equity Portfolio Monitoring · Asset Manager Performance · Fund Attribution Analysis · Trade Execution Analysis · Pharmaceutical Market Share Analysis · Insurance Margin Analysis · Customer Relationship Management · Retail Sales Analysis · Corporate Performance Management · Online Analytics

Global Equity Market Activity

Based on the equity indices that appear on Bloomberg's World Equity Indices page (WEI <Go>), this Fractal Map lets traders and analysts spot outliers and keep abreast of emerging market trends around the world. Unlike a standard watch list, the Fractal Map reveals performance at the top regional level right the way down through the indices and sectors to the individual stock level. This particular example focuses primarily on price movements and trade volumes, but similar Fractal Maps can be configured to track lead indicators such as changes in analyst ratings or forecast earnings across an investible universe.

Equity Portfolio Monitoring

This example is based on a long/short equity hedge fund's portfolio, and allows fund and risk managers to keep close track of their basic risks and returns throughout the trading day. As well as allowing analysis of the individual investments and overall performance, the Fractal Map can also be pivotted to immediately highlight particular concentrations of profit, loss and exposure in different sectors and markets. Similar Fractal Maps can be created for larger portfolios and sets of portfolios invested in equities and other instruments, though as it stands this example is a good illustration of how SMALL a data set can be and still benefit from a Fractal Map overlay.

Asset Manager Performance

This example shows the short, medium and long term performance of a large number of funds run by different asset managers across a range of strategies. It can be used by fund-of-funds, pension funds and fund panels to help determine their asset allocations and recommendations, as well as by the asset management firms themselves to understand their strengths and weaknesses relative to other firms. A similar Fractal Map could be created for a single asset manager to assess their funds' performance based on more detailed internal data.

Fund Attribution Analysis

This type of Fractal Map helps executives, chief investment officers, desk heads, fund managers and performance teams assess fund contribution and attribution relative to a benchmark. Data for a single equity-oriented fund is included in this example, but the data could be extended to cover multiple funds across a firm or desk covering multiple asset classes if required. The data could also be deepened to allow analysis all the way down to individual holdings.

Trade Execution Analysis

This example shows how traders can keep track of the performance of their trade execution algorithms relative to a variety of benckmarks in real-time and intervene if they spot excessive under-performance. The speed that algo engines execute trades means that profitability can be impacted very quickly if something unexpected happens, but the volume of trades being processed means that it is almost impossible for traders to keep proper track. The situation is tailor made for Fractal Maps!

Pharmaceutical Market Share Analysis

This Fractal Map example shows sales and market share for a particular drug across the complex UK primary care sales channel. It is a good example of a deep geographical structure running right the way from a regional level through to post code areas, and could in fact be combined with standard geographical representations such as Google Maps. As with several other examples, the data in this Fractal Map could easily be extended to include additional products, channels and countries.

Insurance Margin Analysis

This example shows how a wholesale insurance broker can assess the volume and profitability of the business they pass through to their underwriters using a Fractal Map. Similar Fractal Maps can be used by retail insurance brokers (passing business to the wholesale brokers) and underwriters (passing business to the reinsurers). Over 30,000 records are displayed in this example making it the largest we have published online, but Fractal Maps are capable of handling data sets 100s or even 1000s of times larger.

Customer Relationship Management

This Fractal Map lets executives, sales team managers and sales reps navigate and analyse opportunities held in CRM system such as Salesforce, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics and SAP CRM, helping them focus on the right sales activities, manage their pipelines and maintain related data more effectively.

Retail Sales Analysis

This example shows the sort of Fractal Map a sales planner, fulfillment manager, director or other executive might use to understand revenue mix across multiple SKUs, product categories, customers, stores and sales staff. A Fractal Map for Supply Chain Management would work on broadly similar lines. It is based on Micorosoft's Northwind database sample that ships with SQL Server and Access, so you can directly compare the speed and depth of insight enabled by Fractal Maps versus a traditional user interface.

Corporate Performance Management

This Fractal Map lets board members, financial officers, financial controllers and business managers quickly and reliably identify where their business is making money... or losing money. We have seen this sort of Fractal Map used on the one hand to facilitate day-to-day operational control of project costs or expense budgets, and at the other end of the spectrum to drive board discussion at board meetings - as one CFO said "Now I have every graph the directors could possibly ask for expressed in one simple format".

Online Analytics

This example shows the sign-up rates of a website's members to a new service over a 24 hour period. It clearly shows who the new service appeals to and when they are logging in, allowing the website owners to manage special offers better and consider how to broaden the appeal of the service to other demographies. Similar Fractal Maps could be used to analyze many facets of online and social media activity patterns and trends.
